Old Mint

Recently Brock, Duane and I (Leola isn't a museum person) spent an afternoon in Carson City at the Nevada State Museum.  Mainly housed in the former Carson City Mint building, the Museum features a number of unique exhibits.  Foremost among them are several that showcase the flow of silver through Nevada's history.

We enjoyed the mining ghost town, complete with boarding house, general store, saloon, and assay office.

Our next steps led down into a mine, a maze of dim tunnels lined with exhibits depicting mining techniques ranging from candle headlamps and picks and shovels

to more modern and efficient methods using modern equipment

and explosives.

A display of gold/silver bearing ores made us realize it's not always easy to recognize.

In the minting exhibit we saw this large ore scales,

assayers' equipment,

and the original Coin Press No. 1 which minted coins from 1870 to 1893, 57 issues of silver, all bearing the distinguishing "CC" mint mark.

Also displayed is a complete set of Carson City Morgan dollars

and several large pieces of silver utensils.

Next, other exhibits.
