Pole Canyon

Hiking Pole Canyon seemed a good way to see different area in Great Basin National Park.  We were on the trail by 7:30 when the air was nice and cool at an elevation between 7000' and 8000'.

We bounced and slid (in our stiff suspension, 1 ton dually truck) for a couple of miles along a washboard gravel road before we parked at the Baker Creek trail head.  We parked and took off on a pleasant 4 mile moderate walk "through different forest communities, along the creek bed, and into several small meadows."  (from the park Trail Guide)

The trail led up through shady forest with lots of rills, creeks, and streams,

across the end of a canyon (the short end of the trail on the map above)

where we were treated to some great vista views.

I rated this one a WOW on the Brock-O-Meter.  Brock is a friend of ours who only says WOW when he's very impressed.

The trail went down into the canyon through aspen and pine forests,

and grassy meadows before entering the Grey Cliffs campground.

From there we were unsure of which way to go.  We started walking the road, hoping we were going in the right direction to return to the truck.

Help arrived in a car driving in our direction.  The occupants, Chris and Tammy, kindly stopped, assured us that we were going in the right direction, then offered to give us a ride to the truck.  Hot and tired, we were glad to accept.  We enjoyed a pleasant chat with our new friends before they dropped us at the truck and waved goodbye.

Many thanks to Chris and Tammy.  We will "pay it forward" whenever we can.

Driving to the "big city" tomorrow.

Louise and Duane
