Explorers

On one of our last two days at Homolovi State Park (AZ) we drove and hiked around the park itself.

First we visited a spot looking for a milling stone areas and petroglyphs.  We failed to find either,

but did have a nice view of the visitor's center and beyond that the city of Winslow,

and the 1 1/2 mile road to our next stop-- Homolovi II, the largest of the Anasazi Ruins.  (We visited Site I on the day we arrived.  See Big Day blog.)

Along the way we passed a couple of resident wild donkeys.

Site II proved to be quite interesting.

After we learned about ancient village life, we drove back to the visitor's center and took a short hike to Sunset Cemetery.  We were surprised to find that the Anasazi weren't the only people to live here.

All of their town washed away.  All they left behind are a few gravestones.

Back at the visitor's center again, we found this interesting display explaining that archeologists just don't dig in the dirt to find information.

Revisiting Homolovi and Winslow was fun, but it's time to move to a cooler state.

Tomorrow, on to Utah.
