Chore day for us usually means finding a laundry and a grocery .We were able to get the laundry done at the rv park, but for groceries we were required to drive 50 miles
past a large windmill array,
through open range,
the Humboldt National Forest,
and two mountain passes
to the town of Ely, NV. Ely started as a stagecoach station along the Pony Express and Central Overland route, then became a major copper exporter.
Today Ely is home to some 4000 people, quite a few casinos,
a couple of cannabis dispensaries,
and the Nevada Northern Railway Museum.
By the time we arrived lunch was first on our list of things to do in Ely. We decided against a couple of large chain food places in order to bolster the local economy. We found the food good and the staff friendly, but the service was slow and the prices very high. For a 1/2 patty melt, a large club sandwich, two orders of fries and two sodas we paid $45.
After lunch we intended to visit the railroad museum, but found that it was too large (several buildings and the museum scattered over 56 acres) to be explored in the time we had. We finished our chores--shopping for groceries and fueling the truck, and drove home
Driving roads and distances like this reminds me of several western stories I've read where the settlers drive to town required one or two nights stay on the road. I'm glad we could do it in a few hours!
Home again, holed up against the afternoon heat,
Louise and Duane
