Plan B

On Friday July 9 Leola decided that she had things to do.  Brock, Duane, and I decided we would take a short bike ride around the plateau in upper Yellowstone. We intended to ride south to Norris, then east to Canyon City, north to Tower Roosevelt, then west back through Mammoth Hot Springs  and home in time for lunch.

We left the rv park about 10, went through Gardiner and the north gate of Yellowstone and up through the canyon,

toodling along appreciating the beautiful weather and equally beautiful scenery.

Up on the plateau that forms the northwest section of the park, we continued south enjoying whatever came into view:
mountains rearing above the sagebrush,

occasional bison,

grassy meadows at the feet at tree clad hills,

fumaroles (boiling water just below the surface letting off steam through vents)

small lakes and ponds,

tall healthy forests, colorful rock formations,

creeks and rivers

At Canyon City we found that the road to Tower-Roosevelt was closed.  Instead of retracing our ride we decided to ride to Fishing Bridge for lunch and continue south around the southern half of the park, turning west at West Thumb and north on the route Duane and I drove Flagg Ranch to Gardiner (see Moving Day July 6 blog).
We spent the rest of the day cruising and looking, and stopping for good pictures.

elk herd grazing right along the roadside.

Yellowstone Lake--about about 4 miles long

rock formations that, along with fumaroles and geysers and hot springs, are evidence of the volcanic activity that formed--and continue to form--most of the area within the park.

That was a nice day's ride!

Next--our last visit in Yellowstone.

Louise and Duane
