Moving Day--July 6

Moving from Flagg Ranch (Wyoming) campground at the south gate of Yellowstone to our last parking spot in Gardiner, Montana, required us to travel the entire length of the national park, taking the west (left hand) part of the lower loop.

The 98 mile trip took 3 hours because the park was full of tourists.  From our campground we joined the queue for the 20 minute crawl 2 miles to the south gate.

The first part of the trip was a repeat of the ride we took earlier (see Cruisin' blog) past the Lewis, Snake, Firehole, and Gibben rivers, and the Upper, Midway, and Lower Geyser Basins.

At Norris we headed north with the Gardner River for company across the Blacktail Deer Plateau

through Mammoth Hot Springs,

and down

through the north gate and past the Roosevelt Arch (the original gateway),

and on down to the town of Gardiner.

Across the Gardner River we settled into Rocky Mountain RV Park for a week.  Our friends Brock and Leola parked next door for a week of exploring.

View to the front  The other three sides just showed our neighbors.

No matter--the local elk population made itself at home throughout the park, often grazing on the grassy patches on either side of us.

We explored north Yellowstone three times during our week here.  One was through the Lamar Valley on the way to the Beartooth Highway (see Creme de la Creme blog).  The other two are coming up.

Next, though, is a little loop north of the park.
