Keeping Cool

The weather here in Longmont, about 30 miles north of Denver, has been hot,hot,hot--around 96 every day.  Thursday was tolerable because we traveled most of the day.  After we arrived and set up, we left the air conditioner to cool the house while we went to town for lunch and groceries.  Friday was tolerable because we spent the better part of the day in the mountains.  When we returned we decided that in the heat of the afternoons we should crank up the bedroom air conditioner to help the rest of the house.  Fortunately we were overly warm for only a couple of hours.  Saturday was hot in the house in the afternoon because I forgot to turn on the bedroom air while we were at the Farmers Market.  Duane was ok because he moved his air vent to blow cool air directly into the garage.  I was hot until 4:30 when we went to town for a couple of hours.  Today was very nice.  I turned on the extra air this morning and the house was nice and cool even in the hottest part of the afternoon.

Part of the heat problem is because the sites here at the fairgrounds rv park are very close together and the heat bounces off the rigs and pools in the narrow spaces between rigs.  Another problem is that there is very little breeze to disperse built up heat.  Of course the area is experiencing unusually high heat for this time of year.  Fortunately the next 5 days or so are predicted to be 10 degrees cooler.  We plan to do a lot of hiking and biking during those days.

We didn't go anywhere today because of the heat and because Duane wanted to play pickleball at the local community center this afternoon.  When we are visiting a new area I like to let him go and scope out the players.  Often all levels of players show up on most play days.  Sometimes, though, high level players will all show up on certain days.  Duane can compete at any level, but I can't.  I prefer to let him be the judge and let me know what days I would enjoy playing.

That said, we will be spending most of our time here touring the area by bike or by foot.  With the  the heat and drought in Colorado, there is a good chance that a fire could  break out in our area.  We need to explore Rocky Mountain National Park as much as possible in case that happens.

No worries now though.

Louise and Duane
