Riding country roads through the mountains doesn't guarantee that we won't run to road work stops. On our quest for the Cavitt Covered Bridge yesterday we were stopped for about 10 minutes while oncoming traffic cleared a lane for us to pass. The road crew applied a tack coat--a thin layer of adhesive material applied between layers of asphalt concrete to keep the concrete layers from degrading.
Dump trucks full of concrete "gravel" dump their loads which are pressed into the tack.
The completed process
By the time we went past the area on the way back (before we took an alternate road in yesterday's blog) the trucks had all emptied their loads.
We were happy to go slowly past the construction. On the other side of us soft edge of the road went straight down to the bottom of the ravine.
