Once again, completely overcast skies and a chilly breeze accompanied us on an all day ride (see Critter Romp blog). Although 1/2 our 120-mile trip was on I5, the scenery was great whether we were on the interstate
or exploring back roads slithering over, under around and through the following the Suislaw River as it wound through mountains and valleys of the Cascade Ranges.
There were an abundance of the hills and curves that Brock and Leola on Spyder and Duane and I on Eagle love to ride, even some very tight ones to give Duane and me the leans we love.
We were in search of four covered bridges. Miss Garmen (the gps system) led us to all four, but none were there. The closest we came was this one concrete bridge.
No ride would be complete in this area without a delay for road work. Todays stop allowed us to see that an entirely new road was being constructed here.
After the covered bridges failed to appear, Brock took the lead in search of a nice city park for our picnic lunch. Once again Miss Garmen failed in her task. We ended up in the town of Drain in an historic home parking lot. The stone wall in front of the house served quite well for our picnic. On the way out, we found the park--directly to the right on the other side of the high school baseball/track field.
Brock and Leola led the way back to Sutherlin where they decided to head home. Duane was sure he had seen a sign a day or two ago for a covered bridge somewhere just outside the city limits. After exploring further, we found it! The Rochester Bridge was a short way down a side road about a mile outside the west city limit.
We took a few moments to enjoy the quiet beauty that surrounds most covered bridges, and to phone Brock and Leola to be sure they knew what they were missing,
then found our way home past Old Glory floating in the breeze.
A beautiful end to a beautiful day.
Louise and Duane
