Loafing

Our activities today consisted of walking around the park for an hour in the morning, and attending the ice cream social in the afternoon.  I also played cards.

Sumpter Oaks Escapees RV Park (Bushnell, FL) is set between  two fields on the east and west and between CR 673 on the south and on the north a beautiful cypress swamp.  A swamp is a wet area that is filled only by rainwater.

This swamp is low now, as can be seen by the highwater mark on the trees.  The surface is covered with algae .  The little spiky things are cypress knees, distinct  structures formed above the roots of a cypress tree.  Their function is unknown, but are general seen on trees growing in swamps.  Current hypotheses state that they might help to aerate the tree's roots, create a barrier to catch sediment and reduce erosion, assist in anchoring the tree in the soft and muddy soil, or any combination  of them.

This swamp is pretty quiet now, but in the summer is host to sandhill cranes, egrets, herons, some fish, and alligators--and a lot more water.

One more day here.
