Goodbye To Y'all

290 miles is a long driving day for us, but the route  north and west along I 27, I 40, and US 84 was really easy.  We rolled past acres of pasture, and

the Cadillac Ranch, an art piece consisting of a line of Cadillacs nose down in the ground.  People are expected to stop and decorate them with graffiti.

We passed a huge cattle feed lot, (this is a very small part).

After a bit we started seeing some rolling hills and rock outcroppings.

Originally we planned to stop for the day at Tucumcari, about 40 miles inside New Mexico, but then we saw that little green sign--the one that mentions the mountain time zone.  We decided that it was too early to park for the day.  With an extra hour of daylight, we decided to go on.

Red rock mesas became more common.

Most of our trip followed old Route 66, which is now I 40.  Remnants of the old route can be seen in the iconic advertising.  When Duane was in middle school, he traveled along this road with his "traveling granny".  He said that she stopped at all of these roadside attractions.

This one has an updated look, but was there back in the day.

As we drove we gained altitude.  As we went up we started seeing more trees which like cooler temperatures.

We arrived at our next stop--Santa Fe--in good time.  We skirted the city on the west side and saw some newer houses build in the old style--low with adobe or adobe style outside walls and flat roofs.

Our home for the next week is Rodeo De Santa, an actual rodeo facility with a few rv sites.  We gained about 3500 feet in altitude (almost 7000 feet here), and the temperature this afternoon was about 10 degrees cooler than in the Canyon/Abilleen area.

We plan on seeing a lot of this area.

Louise and Duane
