Horsing Around

Yesterday when we visited son Duane Jr and family we went primarily to watch the grandkids ride their horses in a small local contest.    The younger children are led by an adult through a set of specifically set poles, cones and barrels.  The older children ride the patterns themselves.  The goal is to complete the pattern and run back to the starting point in the fastest time without knocking over any poles, cones, or barrels.

Jr. led Coy  while

and Brandey led Alyssa.

As the kids are led through the patterns, they are learning balance, how to keep their heads, arms, and legs from flopping while using them to control the horse, and how to conquer their fear of being up high and going really fast, and--a very important skill--how to keep their feet in the stirrups so that they don't lose their boots!

After all of the younger kids were done the older kids competed on their own.
We were able to watch Emma

and Ava run the poles before we had to leave.

Back to the grind today.
