Topsham fair and Nubble Lighthouse

We like to visit local county fairs.  One afternoon we headed north to the town of Topsham (pronounced Tomsum) to see what we could see.  We saw a small but nicely done county fair.  We arrived on Senior Day--only $3 to get in!  We arrived in time for the end of the 4-H horse show,

visited the livestock, including these goats, a handful of cattle, and a few rabbits and fowl.

The entire old vehicle display

We found the blacksmith shop.  Duane couldn't help himself.
Since there were no shows until evening and we don't ride rides, we finished our walk around the other usual displays of produce and handwork and went to Freeport to visit the original L.L. Beane store.  We have no pix because we arrived just as a Texas frog-strangler of a thunder storm rolled through.  We browsed the huge store until the storm  quit then called it a day and headed for home.  Once again we arrived before the big storm--this one with acorn sized hail!  Hurray for good timing!!!

Next day was beautiful.  We took the bike south to explore the shoreline and to see why everybody likes Old Orchard Beach, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit, and Kennebunk.

Tide's out on the salt marsh

A brother and sister-in-law, who are frequent visitors to Ogunquet, recommended several good places to eat, but we left the list home.  We ended up in a little corner cafe in Wells because public restrooms are few and far between in Tourist Country and Me and Dee's offered one for customers. First we had to wind our way through traffic in Old Orchard, and Kennebunkport.

Wells Beach---  BRRR!!!

We stopped at Cape Neddick to see the Nubble Light.

This light is not accessible to visitors.  It sits on a small island across a narrow channel from the mainland.

Incoming tide

Time to head back.  I saw this sign in Kennebunk.  Weird.

Kennebunk's claim to fame--the only village in the world so named.

Tide's in--looks much better.

After spending the day exploring what is designated on the map as "The Maine Beaches Region", we decided that that must be the only draw.  The towns seemed to us to be cookie cutter tourist  towns of souvenir shops, places to stay and places to eat--especially ice cream and traffic.  Nevertheless we enjoyed our ride on this beautiful day.

Next, we go north again.

We enjoy going to the fair also. We usually arrange to leave Canton after our local Stark County fair is over. We take my dad each year. He was a farmer and likes seeing all the animals and produce.

Another beautiful lighthouse.
