TITUS CANYON

After our long journey, we finally found Titus Canyon. Here the road remained narrow but we had sheer rock walls on both sides.

Faulting actions has caused fantastic vertical upthrusts of the sedimentary rock layers.

Gyrations in the rock layers.

Always the changes of vegetation and color. Note the deep blue sky. This was our first day of clear blue cloudless sky. Beautiful!

This wide space in the canyon is a wash or arroyo. The rocks here are softer and erode easier.

During infrequent rains, the water gathers force and rushes through the canyon.

This site is called Klare Springs. We found no sign of water.

We found no petryglyphs either. Apparently someone named ME decided his/her graffiti was more interesting and important.

Here I was trying to capture the odd dark formation mid pic. There is nothing like it in shape or color nearby.

I love these little barrel cacti clinging to the cliffs!

From red to green. Note the changes in vegetation on the canyon floor. In the wash and wide spaces there is abundant growth. In the narrow spaces, the plants can't withstand the rush of water--when it comes!

The rocks fairly groan here. The twists and thrusts are beautiful in their torture.

After a while I couldn't think. I could only gaze in amazement.

The constant fantastic changes boggled my poor little mind!

Just when you think you've seen it all.........

No life?

Wrong!

The road narrows further.

Gila lizard

Desert iguana

Again--something different!

Tenacious life--straight out from a crack in the wall!

Words fail me!

Desert iguana--we think.

More lucious pistacio green.

The road to the canyon and in the canyon was mostly this width!

Canyon's end and view of Death Valley. Although the road was one long roller coaster ride we thoroughly enjoyed every minute. We wouldn't , however, do it again in our truck. We would recommend it to anyone looking for adventure in a smaller vehicle--preferably one with high clearance.

The road to Scotty's Castle, which we visited after our Canyon drive.

But that's another story!

Amazing adventure you guys....it looks like you had the canyon all to yourselves! I put it on our "must see" list.

I LOVE these last two blogs. What beautiful pictures. I just had Paul write down Titus Canyon as a must see place. How long do you think we should plan to visit that entire area?
