Lake Tahoe

Welcome to our last day of touring in this area. Today we took our time getting out the door, leaving at 10am for a drive up Mt. Rose and down the other side to the north east corner of beautiful Lake Tahoe. At the end of SR 431 is SR28. Turn right and you get to the resort town of Kings Beach. This is the home of the historic CALNEVA Lodge. It is the oldest originally licensed casino in the US. It has quite a shady history until the 50's. Then anybody who was somebody in the entertainment business visited or preformed here in the Indian Room.

The Indian Room has this fireplace on the land long side. The other side faces the Lake Tahoe. To the left the short end probably held the performing stage. To the right is the door to the rest of the building. The white line is the CA/NV state line, the gold for CA' source of wealth, the silver for NV's. Gambling was illegal in CA, legal in NV. Frank Sinatra stayed here in 1951 and performed here in 1958. He owned the lodge from 1960 until 1968. He was the eighth owner. Sammy Davis performed here in 1952 and Dean Martin in 1977. Several Kennedys stayed here also.
In addition to this, it has a breathtaking view of the lake from the dining room.

This giant bronze of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce honors the native Americans who inhabited the area.

Turn right out of the CALNEV lot back on 28 and go straight through Incline City and you come to the lake. Here you have it all--blue sky, snow-capped mountains, clear water lake, alpine forest, and golf course!

This is an awesome view.

Click on this pic. There is some very interesting information here. Another view from the mountain side. This lake is huge. This is only one corner. It is especially awesome because it is all naturally made. (See info boards above.)

Notice all the trees. All around Reno, Carson City, Virginia City etc. there are no trees. They were clear cut for miles around to build the towns and mine structures. Trees were being cut from this area and flumed miles to the silver mine areas until the government stepped in.

In Bordertown we are at 5000 feet.

We love this--good reason to close the restroom doncha think?

There were lots of these netted rock terraces.

Out of the snow zone.

Lots of people take advantage of the activities available year round on Mt. Rose. Hiking, skiing, sledding to name a few.

Note the snow poles. These are so the plows can know where the sides of the road are.

We arrived back in South Reno at the bottom of the mountain around 2. Mothers' Day lunch was at the little casino restaurant next door to the rv park, then we went in search of four geocaches within a mile of our park. We found three, not bad. Back home we tucked in for the evening to rest up for our move tomorrow.

Not toured out yet,

Louise and Duane
