Pins And Needles

With nothing better to do today, we goofed off.  We started off with breakfast at the local Black Bear restaurant.  We have previously seen these only in California.  Apparently the one in Cottonwood was built only last year.

Next we tried walking off breakfast at the Walmart.  I bought new jars and pectin for my ongoing jelly project (see Live And Learn and the end of Circling blogs in August).  This afternoon when Duane went to play pool at the Activities Center,  I tried again with the cherry jelly.  I couldn’t find the directions on the pectin box.  It only told me how much fruit to buy.  Hmmm.  I made the first batch the way I tried to make jelly the first time—boiling the juice for 30 minutes.  When I dumped the second envelope of pectin from the box—there were the directions!  Oops!  I was only supposed to boil the juice for one minute.  O Well.  I’ll find out tomorrow if I have to try again.  In the directions I found a section that said what to do if the jelly doesn’t gel.  I think they wrote it just for me.

After my latest jelly attempt, I attempted cherry pie.  I’m too smart to attempt to make crust—which I buy in the grocery cold case.  I do make filling.  The first time I tried, though, I struck out.  I added more corn starch and finally got the juice thick enough.  Then the crust didn’t want to come out of the pan, and ended up wopper-jawed.  Never-the-less, the pie was tasty.  Duane was happy, though I thought it was a little off—too much corn starch maybe—and had to have extra whipped cream on mine.

All in all a busy day for doing nothing.
