Live And Learn

No hiking or touring planned for today (Saturday).  Instead we played pickleball this morning.  Along the way passed this bison herd,

and this little theater in this little town (population as of 2010 census—325).

Theater and café.  On the way home we stopped at a local grocery for fresh vegetables.  I also bought canning lids and 4 pint jars to add to my three.  I had in mind to make some jam.

This afternoon I spent two hours picking  sour cherries from this little tree at the campground.  The manager was glad that someone besides birds was getting some use out of them.

I didn’t know how many I’d need for my jam, but I figured that I might as well get them all; I could always freeze what I didn’t use.

I left plenty for the robins, on the tree and on the ground.

I ended up with a sink full.  After 3 hours of pitting them, I had taken off the top couple of inches.  I got the brilliant idea to make jelly instead of jam—no pitting required!  I had pitted 16 cups of cherries—enough for 4 pies.  These ended up in bags in the freezer.  I bagged the rest and put them in the fridge.

Another thing I learned today—my biggest pots are both too small to hot water bathe my jars of jelly.  Tomorrow I will see if the manager has a canning pot.

Hiking first, though.
