Astor and Leesburg

On Friday we said goodby to St. Augustine and drove south and a little inland to the town of Astor.  The scenery was a little boring--tall pines mixed with palms and scrub interspersed with occasional houses and now and then a town or city.  We got settled in our campground for a week and took a look around.  These pics were taken on the way to Leesburg to get the oil changed in the bike.  I don't know what these trees are, but they have beautiful coral flowers.  The growing season in Fla is Fall, Winter, and Spring since Summer is too hot and dry for growing.  These trees are apparently ornamental.

One day we took the truck (rainy) to downtown Astor to the post office.

The town is a couple of miles long and 2 or 3 streets on either side of the main road.

Back at the rv park.  Some people have been here way too long, doncha think?

For all its unasumability, the area is of great historic importance.

The majestic oak referred to in the first sign.  The white posts are reflectors.

Lots of pink houses in FL.

Also pink wildflowers.

This is one of the housing area in Astor.  This one is situated between the river and a canal.  We found it a safe place to walk just down a little way from the rv park which is right on St Rt 40, a very busy road.

The people in this house get to look

at this every day.  The whole northeast part of FL reminds me of the Piney Woods of east TX.  Trees and scrub then a carved out area for a house or mobile home, some new some old  and/or abandoned.
The house next door to the one above is a two story for sale--asking price is $495,000.

A couple of nice lots for sale.

I loved this.  Alice was my mom's name and I still like The Wizard of Oz.

No matter where you go the sand is always there to remind you that you aren't standing on solid ground.

This pic is out of place.  It is the corner of Yellow Brick and Alice.

Closeup of a flower on that bush above.

As I said--some people have been here way too long.  I think this has been abandoned.

This park has some nice cabins for rent.

The squirrels here are kinda puny by northern standards. So are the acorns.

Activity center  The laundry is the room on the end with the open door

This park is an older one with parking on grass (sand).  The buildings all need upgrading and cleaning.  The manager here is also responsible for two other parks so it's not her fault.  The noise from the road is loud, as well as the barking dogs and the acorns dropping on the roof.  All things considered, though, we've stayed in worse.  We are level at least!

More fun later,
