Poteau

Over the hill and up the road from our rv park is the town of Poteau (poe toe), named for the nearby Poteau River.  During the late 1700's there was a large French outpost at Belle Point, (Fort Smith, AR.  From there people would travel south up the Poteau River (the only river in Oklahoma that flows north), to a secondary post at the base of Cavanal Mountain.  The river was called the Post River or Poteau in French.
Other than the name, the town doesn't seem to have retained any of its French influence.  There is a modern end of town by the US highway where we spent most of our time shopping at Walmart.

We drove around the old downtown area, spruced up for visitors, but with no tourist attractions except for a small local history museum.

For medicinal use only

Our urge for pizza led us to Leona, a small local Italian restaurant.

We had our pick of seating.  The pizza came with a nice thin crust and not a lot of red sauce--just the way we like it.

Tomorrow--new town, new state.
