North Tail Trail

The main reason we stopped in Rogers, AR was to ride the bike along Highway 23 aka the Pig Trail Scenic Byway due to its steep hills and hairpin turns. Last week we rode the southern end from I 40 to Cass (see Adventuring blog).  Today we accessed the north end via CR 12, part of the Blue Star Highway, about 11 miles south of Eureka Springs.

Most of the road is open and relatively flat, running past cattle pastures and hay fields.

We crossed and recrossed War Eagle Creek, a tributary of the White River which feeds Beaver Lake where we are staying.

The steep curvy part is the last three miles

At the bottom of the hill we turned around and rode back up the hill.

In Huntsville we deviated west on US 412, then north on CR 303.

There we crossed War Eagle Creek again, running past the historic War Eagle Mill.

The one lane bridge across the Creek was split plank, easy for cars but tricky for bikes.

The mill is no longer in operation

but retained the gears inside.

The rest of the ground floor was a store offering various kinds of flours and a very nice assortment of jams and jellies canned in Huntsville.  Upstairs is a cafe serving "the best cobbler this side of the moon".  We passed on the cobbler, but bought two jars of jam for our morning bagels.

303 took us back to 12

where we backtracked home to Beaver Lake.

Chore day tomorrow.
