We are staying here in the Trails of Lavender Road RV Park near Tyler TX for at least a month to take care of our vehicle licensing requirements and for our annual physical checkups. Since we arrived last Thursday, we have managed to have our vehicle inspections completed and now have all three of our new vehicle license stickers.
Last Friday Duane had the first doctor's appointment. He had a thorough eye examination. The bad news is that Duane requires a posterior capsulotomy. This sounds serious but is not. When anyone has cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is replaced with an intraocular implant. The fine skin or posterior capsule of the new lens is left in place to support the implant. In a lot of cases (possibly up to 50 percent), through a normal process of cell regeneration, this capsule may turn cloudy, as it did in Duane's case. When the clouding develops, a laser can be used to create an opening in the capsule and clear a path for light to enter the eye. Vision is restored quickly and painlessly with this outpatient procedure. He is scheduled for three appoints in April: one for each eye and one for the final checkup. Duane is not looking forward to the surgery, but is looking forward to getting his clear vision back. The good news is that Duane's macular degeneration (gradual loss of peripheral vision) has not progressed for several years. Also, he does not have glaucoma (as was diagnosed a couple of years ago) and had not had glaucoma for the past couple of years.
Our next appointments are tomorrow, when we both visit our regular doctor for our yearly checkups. Since this requires fasting blood work, we'll treat ourselves to brunch afterward.
Watch this space for further updates.
Louise and Duane
