Up And At ‘Em

An early day for us today.  We exited the Sunrise RV Park under a mix of clouds and sun with a bit of cool breeze.

We dropped our house and truck here at etrailer about 8am,

so that they could trade our old hitch

for the new air-ride hitch..

This took all day.  Meantime we unloaded the bike and rode into Wentzville for   a leisurely breakfast at the Sunny Street Cafe (the same place we ate brunch yesterday).  From there we headed across the hills and valleys

the Boone homestead near Defiance, MO.  This homestead was owned by Daniel Boone’s son Nathan, and is about 5 miles from Daniel’s original plot in Missouri.  The Boone’s moved here from Kentucky with several of their children and grandchildren.

In addition to Nathan Boone’s house, the historic park is home to over a dozen historic buildings moved here from within 50 miles of the site and arranged  to form a small village.

The village is set along two sides of a “village green”, with the  Femme Osage Creek about a half mile to the right and Nathan Boone’s house to the left but not pictured.

The Site is open to the public, but none of the buildings are open.  For $6 each (senior rate) we were given a guided tour of Nathan’s house.  This consisted of six rooms built on three levels.  After Daniel Boone’s wife died he moved into Nathan’s house.

Today the Daniel Boone reenactor chatted with us about what Boone was like and what he did after he moved to this area.

Some of the buildings have windows that offer a peek to the inside.  Duane was very disappointed to find that the blacksmith shop had none.

This house belonged to Boone’s daughter Jemima and her husband.

After our tour we rode through the beautiful day back to Wentzeville.  We had to wait a couple of hours before our hitch installation was finished.  We loaded up the bike and headed south west on I44 for about 40 miles before stopping at the Flying J for the night.

A beautiful end to the day.
