Straight and simple was the order of the day. Our 125 mile loop along CR28, H58, CR77 and back on CR28 was straight and flat except for a couple of hills
and a few graceful curves. Duane was able to relax and enjoy the scenery and the ride.
Before we reached our turnaround point we stopped to visit Au Sable Point Light Station. To reach it we had to walk 1 3/4 miles down a gravel road
along part of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
The light has been in existence since 1874, and is still protecting ships from the shallow reef along shore at this point. The complex of buildings include the keeper's house which houses the gift shop and small museum, and the assistant keepers' (two family) house which gives access to the light. We didn't have exact change for our $3 apiece fee and so did not ascend the tower.
Back on the road again we rode to our turnaround point, the picturesque little tourist town of Grand Marais. We checked out the local campground (looks just like our present campground),
then ate sandwiches for lunch in this little brewery and bar. We've not seen beer keg tables before.
Our return road was level and straight for an hour before we finally returned to Munising.
We were on the lookout for three local waterfalls, and found them quite easily.
Alger Falls is a series of small cascaded that is visible from the road.
Wagner Falls (20 ft) is easily accessible via a short boardwalk.
Munising Falls (50 ft) is at the end of a paved 1/4 mile trail along a cool, shaded sandstone canyon along Munising Creek.
This site is part of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. After I stamped my (National Parks) Passport, we were done and done in. Good thing it was only a few miles back to our "house".
Two days left in this area.
Louise and Duane
