The forecast said no rain, but ominous clouds said otherwise. We took our chances and hopped the bike for Marquette. It is 40 miles from our rv park near Munising, but it is the biggest town where we could do some shopping.
About 10 miles down the road we ran into light showers. We stopped to put on raincoats, but were unsure whether to go on or turn back. When I saw this message on the car in front of us, I took it as a sign.
By the time we arrived in Marquette, the sky was blue again and remained so for the rest of our trip. A stop at the local HD store, a Walmart stop for odds and ends, a visit at a store called Made In Michigan where I found my locally made gift from Michigan (see Flying blog), fast food for lunch, and we were on our way home.
This afternoon we drove to Munising to board our boat for our cruise of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. For two hours we poked along 11 miles of Lake Superior shoreline watching rock formations slowly change shape and or size
as we got closer
and marveling at the beautiful colors (minerals)
and thinking that they should have been called Painted Rocks.
Sometimes they looked like a painter's pallet
Sometimes they looked like a painter's pallet
sometimes like murals
sometimes like abstracts
but all beautiful.
This rock not only had columns, but also a pine tree on top. With no roots on the rock, this tree manages to survive via its root "rope" hanging from the left of the rock edge and connected to the shore. Our guide explained that the root grew along the rock until it found a place to grow. When the softer rock eroded, it left the rock pillars and the hanging root.
After an hour we turned around and chugged our way back to the dock where we climbed into our truck and chugged our way home again.
Tomorrow waterfalls are on the agenda.
