Even though we spent three hours playing pickleball this morning, we found the time and energy for a 4 hour, 120 mile tour the mountains north of Gunnison. From Gunnison we followed CO135 north through Almont, a little tourist area with lodging for people wanting to fish, raft, or horseback ride,
and continued to Crested Butte. We rode around the little town for a look, then found a parking spot and took a walk looking for ice cream. We were disappointed to find only name brands—no locally made stuff. We settled on a little place that wasn’t too busy and sat outside watching the busy street scene while we enjoyed our treat.
From the downtown we rode around the hill into another valley
to the end of the paved part of 135, turned around
and cruised around the Crested Butte Mountain Resort Ski Area.
The only way out was back through Crested Butte and Almont. There we turned north on County Road 742 for a scenic ride along the Taylor River as it wound its way through beautiful valleys
and rugged canyons.
Our turnaround point was the Taylor Reservoir, which was dammed up to provide irrigation water for the valley below.
Again, the only way out was back the way we came. Away we went looking at the scenery backward, which made it all new.
Tomorrow, another ride.
Louise and Duane
