260 miles straight east on I 20 was the route today. Having been this way several times before we knew what to expect: almost 200 miles of oil fields and everything associated with oil production including refineries, extraction equipment, and storage tanks.
In the open spaces between clusters of machines or storage units were miles of power lines needed to keep the machinery running.
In the middle of all this was Odessa/Midland, the supply hub for the oil fields.
What we didn't expect was the lack of activity. Before the fields were full of workers as were the rv parks next to each field. Now the fields were empty except for a few people working on power lines in one place. The parts and equipment stores seemed to have no, or not much business. The rv parks and employee housing which was built after our last trip through here were empty. In Midland and Odessa there were a dozen new motels/hotels with very few cars parked out front.
In the last 60 miles or so we passed miles of wind turbines, and several large cotton fields.
Finally, just outside Abilene the highway was lined with trees.
Our new home for the weekend is Abilene RV Park. Our site is the one next to that motorhome. We stopped here for 4 days for two reasons. One is that we never travel on weekends. The other is that, although we've been around Abilene several times, we've never stopped to see what it has to offer.
Tomorrow we find out.
Louise and Duane
