Today we treated our Ohio friends, Gene and Barbara, to our favorite ride. If you don’t recognize this diner in Bagdad, then you haven’t been tuning in. Duane drove us so that both Gene and Barbara could enjoy the ever changing desert. We took the alternate route home so that they could see the Joshua Tree forest.
On previous trips we kept cruising past this funny looking saguaro cactus. I always wanted to stop for a closer look, but there is no place to pull off near it. Today I was determined to get a picture. Traffic was light so we just stopped in the street for a quick shot. It was worth it. This is a rare phenomenon called a crested saguaro. They are pretty rare.
As you can see, the arms grew out from the very top and went sideways across each other instead of outward and up like the bottom arms.
The weather was overcast in the morning, but cleared up in the afternoon, and the sun brought out the beauty of the desert.
A very relaxing and enjoyable trip for all of us.

I love seeing crested saguaro. My goal this winter is to find 10 while in AZ.
