Scary/Doable

Several years ago when we were hiking in Arches National Park, we took a backcountry hike which was rather challenging in places.  I'm not afraid of heights and took this thin ledge facing forward putting one foot in front of the other.  Duane, who is very nervous on open ledges, tried it the way the hiker is doing in the picture, but lost his footing and slid down the rock face.  I watched from the top as he slid down about 30 feet to some bushes at the bottom.  He was lucky that he slid and didn't fall.  He ended up with some bruises and a few tears in his clothes.

Further along the trail went down into this depression which recent heavy rains had filled to the brim.  Some fellow hikers made a human bridge up the rock face on the right to a spot where hikers could walk down on the other side.  I went that way.  Duane was not doing that again.  He inched around the outside on a small ledge.

For me this was a great adventure.  For him this was the hike from hell.

The rest of the hike was great for both of us.
