If--Then Part 1

If we hadn't visited Capulin (Cap oo leen) Volcano last Wed. 5/31 (see Words Can't Describe blog), then we wouldn't have seen the sign for the town of Folsom and decided that we needed to see the museum there.  If Duane hadn't been talking about scenic rides with a neighbor, then we wouldn't have known that we could reach Folsom via the wonderfully scenic and fun to ride SR 72,

corkscrewing up the mesa

across the top through miles of grasslands

and gliding down the other side.

If we hadn't read about the museum in Folsom

then we would have passed it without even seeing it.

The history of Folsom:  it was started as a railroad stop, a large part of it was washed away in a flood, some of it still remains.

Folsom's claim to fame is the discovery of the Folsom Man Site.  Here former slave turned cowboy George McJunkin discovered a prehistoric buffalo bone with an arrowhead in it.  This proved that humans had lived in North America not just 4000 years, but for more than 11000 years.

If we hadn't decided to poke around the little mercantile store turned into a museum,

we wouldn't have found the following interesting items: (in the law library next to several old typewriters) an Imac computer,

two old Jack-o-shovels,

Scrooge's doorknocker--not looking like Marley's Ghost at the present time.

Folsom wasn't our turnaround point for the day.  We also planned another hike at Capulin Volcano.

That's next time in Part 2.
