A short 20 mile bike hop south on CR 14, The Turquoise Trail Scenic Byway
toward the Sangre De Cristo mountains
led us to the tiny village of Madrid. We were going to stop here, but decided that we wanted to ride some more.
Another 20 miles or so took us into some beautiful scenery closer to the mountains
before we turned around and headed back to Madrid (outskirts below).
Madrid became famous when the (2007) biker comedy film Wild Hogs came to film in town. When the filming was done, Maggie's Diner was the only set left behind.
We found a parking space on the street (two lots are available for $5 a day), then, being good tourists, checked out Maggie's.
It is being used as a gift shop, primarily selling biker stuff.
Duane didn't find anything he couldn't live without, but that tee shirt on the right--the second one in, blue with an American flag--left with me.
No eating, just paying at the counter now.
We stashed the shirt in the bike then wandered down the street. I (literally) stopped to smell the roses (not here, but at a similar shop) when a voice said, "The ones behind there smell sweeter." This led to a pleasant chat with the lady who owned the shop, and her friend, both of whom were sitting on the porch in the shade. Their recommendation for lunch took us past this shop,
to The Holler for lunch. Most patrons elected to sit outside,
but we were not alone inside.
The name suggest Appalation Mountain cuisine--and there were a few dishes like fried green tomatoes and fried okra, but the menu included more of what we call "trendy" dishes (e.g. the coleslaw was dressed with chipotle mayonnaise). They weren't cheap either, but you'll have that in small touristy places like this.
After lunch we took 14 back to Santa Fe.
A nice ride on a nice day.
Louise and Duane
Ps. This place in Madrid is for sale. You want to buy it?
