When branches are broken from trees and the tree grows a 'scab' of bark to heal the tear, it forms a knot. These growths are actually burls. In these cases the trees have grown in a deformed manner. The most common form is the roudnded outgrowth on a trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. The burls results from stress to the trees, such as injury, insects, virus, or fungus. Most burls grown under ground, attached to the roots.
Burls are prized for their beauty and rarity, sought aftrer by furniture makers, artists, and wood sculptors.
