What a day! On our circle ride we took UT24 to Scenic Road 12 which wiggles its way south, west and northwest before it joins US89. There we went north then turned east to access UT62 north back to UT24 and home. The 7 hour 230 mile ride took us along the west edge of Capitol Reef NP, across the top of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, across the northernmost tip of Bryce Canyon NP, and through a lot of the Dixie National Forest.
Our original plan was to drive 12 to see if we wanted to take that route south when we move on Wednesday, then turn around and drive back. We ended up riding home along the alternate route we were considering so that we could make a more informed decision.
Along the way we crossed Boulder Mountain
where we had a hazy view of Capitol Reef (under the two mountain peaks on the middle left)
and a view of Escalante.
In Escalante we rode a razorback ridge
with spectacular views both sides of the road,
We exited the park, crossed the Kodachrome Basin,
and reentered the park
and caught a view of Boulder Mountain,
and some beautiful white rock spires
We exited Escalante and rode in and out of Bryce ,
to the town of that name. Here we found our next RV park. At this point we had decided that the Scenic route was beautiful bike riding, but not really suitable for rv travel.
Just after Red Canyon, we access US89 north and finally stopped for lunch in Panguitch (penguich meaning big fish), UT. We stopped at the first place we came to Kenny Rays, but there are several places here to try. While we waited Duane discovered his glasses frames were missing a screw.
Our waitress directed us to the helpful folks here at Southern Utah Vision Care where they fixed Duane’s frames for no charge, and we were on our way again.
The return route was a bit of a letdown. The ride and the scenery were a lot different, with wide green, sparsely-settled valleys
and long, gradual elevation changes.
62 to 24 and home.
Back at the rv park I found a place to store my cherry juice before settling in for the evening.
One last hike tomorrow.
Louise and Duane
